Postgraduate qualifications

A PhD is the University's main and highest level research degree. 

As a PhD student, you'll focus on producing independent and original research that makes a significant contribution to knowledge in your field of study. You can either propose your own research topic or apply to work on a pre-defined research project, like a studentship. 

Assessment is by submission of a thesis and an oral examination (viva).

A PhD normally takes 3-4 years full-time (or 4-7 years part-time) to complete, including a probationary first year. Progression at the end of the probation is not automatic. You’ll need to pass a formal progress assessment to continue.

Most applicants will have completed at least 1 year of postgraduate study, usually a research-focused Master’s degree, before starting a PhD. 

Cambridge offers two types of MPhil: 

• MPhil by Advanced Study, which includes taught elements 
• MPhil by Research/Thesis, which is entirely research-based

MPhils are typically studied over 9–12 months full-time or 2 years part-time. Most taught MPhils are only available full-time.

Both routes provide an excellent transition to PhD study by developing research skills and specialist knowledge. The MPhil dissertation is also a valuable introductory experience for doctoral research. 

For some subjects, you need an MPhil to progress to a PhD.

The MRes is a research programme specifically designed to prepare students for doctoral study (PhD) or a career in research. 

It focuses on developing research skills and methodologies, and combines taught modules, research skills training, and a substantial independent research component. 

The MRes is a 1-year full-time course, but at Cambridge it is usually offered only as part of a 4-year combined doctoral programme. Continuation to the PhD is subject to satisfactory performance in the MRes and the identification of a suitable topic and supervisor.

The MASt is a 9-month, full-time Master's course, designed as a top-up for students who already hold a 3-year undergraduate degree. 

It is the equivalent of a fourth undergraduate year, and students work alongside fourth-year (Part III) students taking the final year of an integrated Master's.

The MSt is a flexible, part-time Master’s degree designed to be completed alongside existing commitments, including full-time work. This enables professionals to develop their interests for career progression, diversification or personal development. 

The programme is usually 2 years and contains a significant taught element through modular teaching blocks, and a research project that may be work-related, if appropriate. 

The flexible format also makes them accessible to students living outside Cambridge, including international students - although students are usually required to attend residentials in Cambridge during the programme.
