Assessment
Thesis / Dissertation
The maximum length for the thesis is 80,000 words, in accordance with the Degree Committee requirements.
The Faculty's Degree Committee will appoint two examiners to examine the student's thesis, normally one internal examiner and one external examiner. Neither examiner may be the student's Supervisor. An oral examination is compulsory. At the discretion of the Degree Committee, an Independent Chair may also be appointed to attend the oral examination.
Other
In the third term (the fifth term for part-time students), students will submit a 10,000-word report and have an oral assessment based on it to confirm that satisfactory progress has been made. Full registration for the PhD is subject to successfully completing this assessment.
Students are required to complete a training and progress log at least once per year, recording details of any training sessions they have undertaken and noting their progress to date. The department offers some in-house research training and advice sessions for PhD students and also encourages students to make full use of the training opportunities available via the University's Social Sciences Research Methods Centre.
