PhD in Land Economy

The Department of Land Economy offers a PhD programme that can be taken full-time or part-time. The Department currently has over 70 PhD students at different stages of their PhD, working in a range of areas:

• Climate, Environmental and Energy Policy

• Environmental Economics

• Public Law, Governance and Public Policy

• Private Law

• Planning, Housing, Urban Policy and Urban Studies

• Real Estate Economics and Finance

• Regional & Urban Economics and Economic Geography

The research carried out in the Department is multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, drawing on economics, law, finance, public policy, planning, geography, environmental science and engineering, and the social sciences more broadly (including sociology and political science). Our Department was ranked first in the UK’s latest Research Excellence Framework. 87.5% of our impact case studies, including research on the transition to a low-carbon economy, were judged to be “world-leading”. The aims of the Department’s PhD programme are:

• to enable students of high calibre to pursue their education at an advanced level, drawing on one or more social science disciplines represented at the Department;

• to provide opportunities for education in a multidisciplinary environment with a strong research ethos, which brings together students and academics from a wide variety of backgrounds and fosters an international approach to common problems;

• to provide students with opportunities to build on and develop substantive material and research methods that they may have previously studied, and to broaden their knowledge base;

• to equip students with the means to undertake their own high-quality research;

• to provide students with appropriate skills and experience to enable them to use information and resources critically.
