Postgraduate Study

I chose to apply to the MPhil in Genomic Medicine as it offered a diverse range of modules covering everything from basic biology and genetics through to programming and statistics. Through the mix of lectures and practical sessions, I was able to both deepen my theoretical understanding of genomics as well as develop key practical skills for working with genomic data. The large focus placed on applications also allowed me to gain an appreciation of how genomics was currently being applied in both the research and clinical settings. This course has greatly helped me prepare for a career in this exciting field, and I regularly use the skills I learned on the course in my current work in bioinformatics.

Following my undergraduate degree, I wanted to explore the revolutionary field of genomics. Very few master’s programs incorporate the basic science of genomics with technical bioinformatic skills and an understanding of the clinical applications and limitations of this field. The MPhil in Genomic Medicine at the University of Cambridge allowed me to deepen my knowledge in all three of these areas.

I loved the discussion-based and hands-on structure of the course. The modules always paired lectures with exercises and group presentations—from analyzing phylogenetic trees of pathogens to discussing real-life clinical conundrums in cancer genomics–to immerse us in the material. Moreover, the dissertation provided the opportunity to conduct meaningful genomic research under the supervision of world-class scientists and innovators in a huge variety of research areas. Although challenging, my dissertation allowed me to dive deep into an area of genomics that interested me while also developing valuable research and computational skills.

I cannot recommend the MPhil in Genomic Medicine highly enough to anyone interested in learning more about the field! I know I will carry the knowledge and skills I gained from this course throughout my medical education and future career as a physician.

The Genomic Medicine course offered a uniquely wide range of academics and professionals to learn from, many at the forefront of the NHS's genomics revolution. I got the opportunity to engage with practicing genomic counsellors, renowned bioinformaticians, and research scientists specialising across the entire field of genomics.

The focus on practical work and applied understanding brought me to the point where I can take a sequenced genome and derive real understanding from it, a skill with growing demand in the era of affordable sequencing. Furthermore, the basic programming skills I derived from the course are invaluable for my current work as a cell biologist.

I can't thank the staff enough for the support they offered me through practice interviews, academic references, and a research project which gave me the experience I needed to progress onto my PhD.
