Phyllis, (Apr. 27, 2026)Pursuing my PhD in the German Section has been a deeply rewarding experience. Throughout my research, I have been inspired by the Section's remarkable commitment to establishing and fortifying links between literary/cultural studies and an engagement for social justice. It has been rewarding to be part of an intellectual community that, in regular lectures, seminars, or workshops, labours towards emancipatory forms of criticism. I also greatly profited from the section's inter- and transdisciplinary aspirations, covering Comparative Literature, History, Film Studies, and which included collaborations with novelists, critical theorists, translators, and musicians.
Syamala, (Sep. 30, 2020)German at Cambridge is an extremely supportive and rewarding environment in which to pursue doctoral study. The range and quality of supervision is excellent, and there is a warm personal and intellectual atmosphere between staff and students. Library and study resources at Cambridge are second to none, and the regular research seminar and range of events (screenings, talks, etc.) is stimulating. The section has well-established links to universities in Berlin and Chicago for research abroad and offers strong support for activities at other institutions. I’ve had a wonderful time doing my PhD here.
Melina, (Sep. 30, 2020)I can hardly imagine a more supportive, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating PhD experience than the one offered in the German section at Cambridge. Academic excellence and rigour here is paired with sincere concern for broader societal questions as well as students’ wellbeing and development. Together with the inspiring environment of the university as a whole, this has made for an outstanding research experience.
