Funding Opportunities

Studentships offered by AHRC, ESRC and NERC, and other funding opportunities may be available. Details, eligibility criteria and application deadlines can be found at www.geog.cam.ac.uk/graduate/studentships. If you wish to be considered for a Research Council studentship you should indicate this on your application form.

Eligible applications received by the Cambridge NERC DTP application deadline will be considered for NERC-funded studentships. A full studentship will cover the cost of fees at home rate and a maintenance allowance. Students with overseas-fee status will need to secure additional funds to provide the fee difference. For this reason, applicants seeking NERC funding are strongly advised to submit their application by the department’s December funding competition deadline to be considered for all eligible sources of funding.

General Funding Opportunities

Fees and Maintenance

My fee status is:

I shall have the following financial dependants:

Your Estimated Annual Commitment:

Component Cost
University Composition Fee £9,858
Maintenance £18,625
Total Annual Commitment £28,483
Component Cost
University Composition Fee £9,858
Maintenance £18,625
Total Annual Commitment £28,483

Students may have to bear additional costs concerning PhD-associated fieldwork and/or research trips. These will be specific to the individual student and project. Applicants should discuss any additional costs with their potential supervisor prior to application. Once students are in the Department, there are limited departmental funds that students can apply for. However, this is likely to be insufficient to cover all costs, so students may have to find additional funding elsewhere, e.g. University/College funding.

Applicants will need to be aware that different conditions apply depending on the topic of the research project. Applicants for research in geography should select the following course: PhD (probationary) in Geography in the Department of Geography. The department will then decide into which category – Physical/Natural Science or Social Sciences and Humanities – your application falls. This will affect the level of fees paid by applicants with overseas fee status.

If you study part-time, the University Composition Fee will be 60% of the annual full-time fee for 5 years; or 75% of the annual full-time fee for 4 years.
