Apply using the Applicant Portal
The Apply Now button on the right will take you to the Applicant Portal. There, you can create and submit your application and supporting documents, and you can also request your references.
An application is only complete when:
- you have submitted your application and supporting documents via the Applicant Portal
- you have paid the application fee if applicable. For further information on application fees, and which courses require an application fee, see here.
- your referees have provided their references.
If you miss the deadlines specified in this section, you will not be able to submit your application.
You must make informal contact with members of the VetMD Committee (via the Postgraduate Co-ordinator) to discuss the suitability of your research prior to submitting a formal application. Once you have obtained approval of the VetMD Committee you can submit a formal online application. See below for more details.
Selection Process
Applications are considered on a rolling basis. Applicants should expect to hear whether they have been successful within twelve weeks following the submission of their completed application and required references.
All eligible applicants will be considered by the Vet MD committee which meets termly or as required.

Things You'll Need
In order to apply for this course you'll need to think about getting a few things ready before you apply.
- Two academic references
- Transcript
- CV/resume
- Evidence of competence in English

your research interests; reasons for applying for this course; and any relevant training or experience, (including details of any subject-relevant courses, scholarships and awards) c.500 words. - Research Proposal (document upload) (mandatory)
A summary of the proposed subject of study or research, including the following: A plan of the work to be undertaken and an account of the methods to be used. The place and time where the work is to be carried out. The method of financing the work. The name of suitably qualified University staff member who is proposed as supervisor. - Confirmation of contact
You should contact the Postgraduate Coordinator (fr288@cam.ac.uk) attaching an outline of your proposed project and the name of a prospective supervisor. We will then put you in contact with members of the VetMD Committee to discuss the suitability of your proposal. We strongly advise you obtain approval from the Vet MD before submitting a formal online application.

How to Find a Supervisor
Before applying
You must have the support from a potential supervisor before submitting an application. To identify a potential supervisor you should read about our staff and their work on our website and make contact with those Researchers (list here) or Clinicians (list here) who you feel would be most suitable to supervise your specific project. You should explain why you are interested in doing a project under their supervision, introduce your project idea, outline your experience and research interests, and include any other useful information (eg funding) and a copy of your CV.
If you submit your application without naming a supervisor we will not be able progress your application until you have the confirmed support of a supervisor. Please visit the How to Apply page on the Department of Veterinary Medicine website to find more information about how to apply and how to find potential supervisors.
VetMD Committee approval
Priot to applying you must make contact with the Postgraduate Coordinator (fr288@cam.ac.uk) attaching an outline of your proposed project and the name of the prospective supervisor. We will put you in contact with members of the VetMD Committee to discuss the suitability of the proposal. We strongly advise you obtain approval before embarking upon a body of work to ensure it is appropriate for the degree. Once you have obtained approval of the VetMD Committee you may then to submit a formal online application.
