Funding Opportunities
The Institute offers a number of fully-funded PhD studentships annually. In the majority of cases, funding is provided by the charity Cancer Research UK (CRUK); and in some cases, by external organisations.
A CRUK CI studentship will cover payment of University fees and an index-linked stipend at the CRUK rate (£22,894 per annum in 2027-28, rising annually by 1.75%). Students are also provided with consumables funding via their Research Group, and a travel allowance for conference attendance may be available.
The majority of PhD studentships are advertised to coincide with the course application opening date in early September, with a studentship application deadline around mid-October. Studentships are advertised on the CRUK CI website, the Postgraduate Funding Search, the University's Job Opportunities page under 'Studentships', and on the websites jobs.ac.uk and FindAPhD.com.
In addition, studentships are advertised from time to time throughout the year. Prospective students should keep an eye on the relevant channels, as well as our website, for these opportunities.
The studentship advertisement will make it clear whether both Home and Overseas fees, or just Home fees are covered. The start term of the PhD opportunity will also be specified.
