The full‑time MPhil is a one‑year research degree supervised by an expert in your chosen field. You will focus on your own research project and complete the course with a thesis and an oral exam.
Some students take the MPhil on its own with only one year of funding. To continue to the PhD, you need satisfactory MPhil results and three more years of study and funding. Your PhD can develop ideas from your MPhil, but the work must be new.
Staff can answer informal questions about their research areas. If you know what you want to study, contact a potential supervisor early to check if they can support your project. We offer training in research methods, data analysis, and presentation skills.
The course introduces students to key research skills and specialist knowledge. Its main aims are:
· give students with relevant undergraduate experience the chance to do focused research with close supervision
· help students build the skills they need for their research interests
Learning outcomes
By the end of the programme, students will:
have a solid understanding of the main techniques and the key reading related to their research
be able to use their knowledge in original ways and understand how research is carried out and interpreted in their field
be able to judge current research and research methods clearly and thoughtfully
show independence and creativity in solving problems, and be able to plan and carry out their research on their own
Continuing
Students can apply for the PhD after the MPhil, but finishing the MPhil doesn’t guarantee a place.
