Unlike purely theoretical courses, ISMM immersed me in the real world through a diverse range of live projects. From optimising sales pipelines for metal fabricators to prototyping medical equipment for anaesthetists and navigating building sites for concrete piling, I was able to engage with a diverse array of sectors.
This exposure didn’t just build my technical skills; it made me adaptable. This foundation was vital when I stepped into the role of Senior Consultant directly following ISMM, where I felt fully equipped to lead complex projects from day one. Currently, I am pursuing a PhD in Computer Vision, directly building upon the research foundations I established during my ISMM dissertation. ISMM was an unmatched opportunity to gain a competitive edge.”

The biggest advantage it gave me was access to a breadth of experience across both academia through the professors at the institute (who were immensely helpful throughout) as well as across industry through the work projects. The latter was definitely my favourite part of the course and left me very prepared to either join a company or start my own business right after graduating the course, something I wouldn't be able to say had I done another course. Since finishing the course I've founded a startup in the space industry and the things I learned at the IFM still help me more than a year into the journey, from little things like skills classes on public speaking to larger lessons on supply chain management and managing people in general.”

The programme gave me a strong foundation in systems thinking, data-driven decision-making, and strategic problem solving across complex industrial environments. What I particularly valued was the interdisciplinary nature of the course and the opportunity to work on real-world industry challenges alongside an exceptionally talented cohort. It pushed me to think beyond technical problem solving alone and develop a broader perspective on how engineering, operations, and management come together in practice.
Since graduating, I have been working in solutions and forward deployed engineering, where I sit at the intersection of technology, business, and implementation. My work involves helping organisations understand, adopt, and apply technical solutions in ways that improve operational performance, decision-making, and business outcomes. It has been exciting to build on my interest in complex systems by working in roles that require both technical depth and strong stakeholder engagement.
The learnings from the ISMM programme have been highly relevant to my career so far. The course strengthened my ability to approach problems in a structured, analytical, and systems-oriented way, which is something I now draw on regularly in my work. It also gave me confidence in navigating technical and strategic conversations across different stakeholders, and in thinking carefully about how technology can be deployed effectively within real organisational settings.”
