Apply using the Applicant Portal
The Apply Now button on the right will take you to the Applicant Portal. There, you can create and submit your application and supporting documents, and you can also request your references.
An application is only complete when:
- you have submitted your application and supporting documents via the Applicant Portal
- you have paid the application fee if applicable. For further information on application fees, and which courses require an application fee, see here.
- your referees have provided their references.
Selection Process
Applications are considered as they are received, on a rolling basis. Please be aware that places are limited and the course may fill up before the published deadline. The Centre welcomes and encourages early applications where possible.
You should expect to hear whether your application is successful within ten weeks following the submission of your completed application and references.

Things You'll Need
You should start preparing the things that you'll need when you apply. These will be mandatory, unless specifically flagged as optional.

Two referees willing to give you a reference
Either academic or professional – please see our References guidance for more information about which type you need. Your referees will need to have submitted their reference by the course deadline. - Transcript
- CV/resume
- Evidence of competence in English
If required - please see our Competence in English guidance for more information. - Core - Research Proposal (7500 characters) (mandatory)
A research/thesis proposal of approximately 500 words. The word count excludes the title and bibliography but includes footnotes and inline citations. - Core - Sample of Work (1) (document upload) (mandatory)
A sample of your written work (around 2000 words) from a previous academic course, on a subject that is as close as possible to the fields you will be working in for the MPhil. The word count excludes the title and bibliography but includes footnotes and inline citations. - Core - Statement of Interest (1500 characters) (mandatory)
Provide a statement of your interest in, or commitment to, Latin America and outline your motivation for pursuing the MPhil programme.
Gates Cambridge Scholarships
If you wish to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship you will also need to provide the following:

How to Find a Supervisor
You may contact a potential supervisor before applying if you wish. You may consult the list of potential supervisors, but please note that this list is not exhaustive.
If your application is successful, and you have not indicated in your application the name of a suitable person who has agreed in principle to supervise your thesis, a supervisor will provisionally be appointed as part of the selection process. All supervision arrangements will be reviewed at the start of the course.
