Postgraduate Study

Teaching

Candidates shall complete two pathway core modules, one research methods module and three optional modules; they must also submit a 12,000-word dissertation.

The modules offered for this course are confirmed on an annual basis but may include:

  • Research methods
  • Dissertation, research design, and structure
  • Corporate finance and real estate
  • Real estate finance and investment
  • Legal issues in land use and finance
  • The macroeconomy and housing
  • Property development

plus optional modules from other taught MPhil courses offered by the Department of Land Economy.

One to one supervision

Group supervisions are offered for most modules. Students can expect to receive up to 4 supervisions per core module, which equates to some 16 hours. Other supervisions, classes and workshops may also be arranged. Students will meet individually with their dissertation supervisor on a regular basis.

The University of Cambridge publishes an annual Code of Practice which sets out the University’s expectations regarding supervision.

Seminars & classes

The Department offers a weekly seminar programme for all students during term time; postgraduate students are encouraged to attend. These seminars are typically one hour long, equating to eight hours per term.

A regular series of practitioner seminars takes place with presentations by senior professionals from the real estate, finance and investment communities.

Lectures

Typically two hours per module per week. Students take four modules per term, equating to eight hours per week (128 hours per year).

Practicals

The core module group supervisions and the research methods classes involve practical exercises to develop analytic techniques.

Posters and Presentations

A presentation is required as part of the module dissertation, research design and structure.

Feedback

Feedback and guidance are given to assist students in developing and drafting the dissertation research project. Feedback is also given on module essays that are not part of the formal assessment process. Feedback sessions are arranged by module leaders following examinations.

Assessment

Thesis / Dissertation

A dissertation of not more than 12,000 words.

Other

Assessments will be through a range of formats which may include coursework, written and oral examinations, posters, presentations and projects.
