Kate O'Brien , (Apr. 2, 2025)My experience as a Post Graduate student in the Department of Genetics has been very rewarding. I’ve had the opportunity to work with a brilliant supervisor and lab members who have been incredibly supportive, offering guidance and constructive feedback throughout my project. Conducting research in a field I’m passionate about has been an amazing experience, as not only have I gotten to learn more about this topic but through this experience my critical thinking, problem solving, and technical skills have strengthened. As a postgraduate student we have access to many optional workshops and classes from academic writing to bioinformatics, which are incredibly useful in developing as a researcher. This experience has truly prepared me for a career in research and has been one I have thoroughly enjoyed.

It's big enough that it houses research groups that span many different themes in biology; it's small enough that you get to know most people working here within a few years. This means that if you ever need help running an experiment or exploring something theoretically, you'll know of a friendly face within the department who is an expert!
