My supervisor has been excellent and I have also had extremely helpful constructive input from my departmental advisor; after a year here I feel my research skills have developed significantly. The department is full of people with incredible expertise and the research is so varied you’re always exposed to something new and exciting. There are also regular seminars from local and visiting researchers both in genetics and related fields that provide food for thought. It’s also a very friendly department with a welcoming atmosphere and there are many opportunities to meet people and ponder ideas over a tea break.

His mentorship has strengthened my confidence, deepened my understanding of my project, and helped me grow into a far more independent researcher than I ever imagined. The department itself is incredibly supportive. The teams behind the facilities such as microscopy, the fly facility, administration and IT, are always available to assist (seriously, they should get superhero capes). Internal and external seminars, research talks, and optional courses also help in so many ways: they guide you through research challenges, build practical skills, broaden your perspective, and inspire creative thinking.
What really sets this place apart is the people. Colleagues from other groups are always ready to lend a hand, often going above and beyond. The environment is super collaborative, inspiring, and full of brilliant minds who are extremely humble and approachable. Being part of this department doesn’t just make you a better scientist, it shows you how far curiosity, collaboration, and a little courage can take you!
