Jacqui Cho, (Apr. 3, 2026)I remember my MPhil in African Studies at Cambridge as being marked by truly exceptional and supportive faculty, as well as a wonderful cohort. I especially appreciated the year-long one-to-one guidance for my dissertation, which I was later able to publish in an academic journal thanks to the encouragement of many at the Centre of African Studies. The small classroom discussions were both stimulating and respectful, providing space to reflect on our own views while engaging seriously with different perspectives. I’m grateful for how the MPhil encouraged me to ask critical questions and to situate my own understanding within a broader context. The degree has been invaluable in shaping both the practice-oriented and academic work I have since pursued, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a deeper engagement with Africa and, more broadly, the politics shaping our world today.
Tezera Tazebew, (Apr. 2, 2026)I truly enjoyed my time as an MPhil student in African Studies at the University of Cambridge. The programme offered a well-rounded training, and the core and optional papers I took were engaging and thought-provoking. I found the required and suggested readings intellectually stimulating, providing a foundation for further reflection in the field. The MPhil experience also prepared me to take the next step in my academic journey, giving me the grounding to continue into PhD studies at the same university. I was fortunate that CAS and Cambridge offered excellent facilities, especially the African Studies library, which supported my academic work. I also appreciated the guidance provided on essay and dissertation writing and the welcoming environment of the Centre. I feel very fortunate to have been part of the MPhil programme, which proved rewarding for both my ongoing academic journey and the lasting friendships and networks I formed.
Neo-A. H. O. Allert, (Apr. 1, 2026)I really enjoyed doing the MPhil in African Studies and will always cherish the memories I made while studying at the Centre of African Studies! The MPhil introduced me to many new perspectives and changed the way I view Africa and the world. Its expansive scope and multidisciplinary outlook allowed me to step out of my disciplinary comfort zone and embrace new ways of thinking and doing research. The course helped me hone my research skills as well as my capacity for critical thinking. The MPhil is an incredibly rewarding degree that, due to its holistic approach, manages to do justice to Africa in all its complexity and diversity. Besides the academic side of things, the MPhil excels at creating a vibrant social community, bringing together many different people from many different walks of life. Students are closely tied into the research community at the Centre and its more than wonderful library with its brilliant expert librarians. As an MPhil student I always felt welcome at the Centre and the library, and they have become a home away from home for me!
