Postgraduate Study

My MPhil research project at the Department of Genetics investigates host-parasite interactions, focusing on population evolution and immune adaptations. The department is a unique environment that facilitates foundational research, allowing exciting innovative work. The collaborative working environment provides lots of opportunities to learn from the researchers both in the lab and through our departmental seminars.

I enjoy the sense of community in Genetics, with researchers from all over the world and from diverse scientific backgrounds who are so welcoming and who bring new perspectives to the field. The department has a holistic approach to well-being, with lots of social events, involved mentorship and career support. Studying in Genetics has been an incredibly fulfilling experience and I feel I have joined a dynamic and passionate scientific community.

Zoha Panezai (Jiggins Group), (Mar. 16, 2026)

The MPhil in Genetics has been a very rewarding experience. The department is an exceptionally supportive and collaborative place to work, and many of the best moments come from casual tea room conversations with colleagues across different areas of genetics.

There are also many ways to get involved in the department beyond research. I have taken part in several of these, including supervising for the undergraduate Mathematical and Computational Biology course, joining the Department of Genetics Seminar Committee, and helping organise the Cambridge Genetics Christmas Labathon.

The department regularly hosts seminars and events, and people are consistently generous with their time and ideas. Together, this creates a strong culture of intellectual curiosity and exploration.
