Multi-disciplinary Gender Studies is no longer accepting new applications.
The PhD programme in Multi-disciplinary Gender Studies (PhD-MGS) introduces students from a wide variety of academic backgrounds to the traditions, methods and front-line research that shape gender analyses at an advanced level through a series of seminars and lectures as well as close personal supervision. Those who have not read the MPhil in Multi-disciplinary Gender Studies will follow a series of courses, seminars and lectures throughout the Michaelmas and Lent terms of their first year:
- Theory and Controversy
- Research Methodologies
- Multi-disciplinary Gender Research Seminar
- Multi-disciplinary Speaker Programme
Each PhD student will work with a Principal Supervisor who will guide their research. PhD candidates are expected to complete and submit their thesis within 12 terms of admission to the University.
Learning Outcomes
The PhD programme is designed to enable students to produce original research that makes a significant contribution to the field of gender studies. The outcomes of the programme are achieved both through focused study of a wide range of selected specialised aspects of gender analysis, and through development of more general research skills and methods that enable the student to produce original, independent work. The course aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to:
- use a range of methods for gathering, analysing and interpreting research material;
- apply normative theories to substantive research topics;
- frame research questions, to construct appropriate research designs, and develop a thorough grasp of a wide range of methodological approaches;
- interpret complex research publications effectively;
- independently manage primary research, including data management and the writing up of research as well as understanding codes of research practice and research ethics;
- present research and also to make use of constructive criticism.
Continuing
Applicants applying to continue from MPhil courses will need to achieve a mark of 70% or more overall and 70% in the dissertation element.
