Postgraduate Admissions

Apply using the Applicant Portal

The Apply Now button on the right will take you to the Applicant Portal. There, you can create and submit your application and supporting documents, and you can also request your references.

An application is only complete when:

  1. you have submitted your application and supporting documents via the Applicant Portal
  2. you have paid the £75 application fee. Further information on application fees see here.
  3. your referees have provided their references.

If you miss the deadlines specified in this section, you will not be able to submit your application.

Applicants are asked to state on their online application forms whether they would prefer to proceed to doctoral study at Oxford, Cambridge or Loughborough after the MRes. Applicants will be asked to rank their preferences 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and to explain the reasons for this ranking.

All successful applicants will have an interview by a member of Cambridge academic staff. This may be undertaken by telephone. An additional face-to-face interview may be arranged by the institution that the applicant has selected for doctoral study.

Selection Process

Decisions on applications can usually only be made when agreements with industrial partners have been reached on specific projects. Therefore, decisions on applications can be made at any time throughout the year, but most will be made between February and May (inclusive), as and when project funding is confirmed. Shortlisted applicants will normally be called to interview within 12 weeks following the submission of their completed application and required supporting documents.

It is possible that all places will be filled before the advertised deadline. If this occurs, the course entry in the online prospectus will be labelled as "closed

How to Find a Supervisor

There is no requirement to identify a supervisor for this programme at the point of applying. Students intending to be based at Cambridge or Oxford for the PhD phase are recruited to study on the basis of undertaking a specific project. Therefore the supervisor and PhD project are determined during the admissions process and are normally known from the outset. For students intending to be based at Loughborough for the PhD phase, the supervisor and PhD project are defined during the MRes year.
